What is IP Rating
The IP Rating (Ingress Protection Rating) refers to the different levels of protection a product provides against foreign objects (such as fingers, wires and dusts) and water ingress. The first digit is the protection rating against solid objects while the second digit is the rating against the water. Please refer to the following table for more details.
In practical, we often omit the test for solid object as the water protection of the same grade more or less means the product can pass the same grade of solid object protection test, especially for grade 5 and above. So if we tested a product for IPX5, we would mark them as IP55, and IPX6 to be IP66…etc.
Normally for marine grade switches, switch panels, sockets or meters installed in outdoor environment, IP66 and above is suggested. Note that in the industry the IP rating often applies to only the front exposed parts after installation while the rest of the products are protected by gaskets.

- IPX5 or IP55 – Water Jet Test: a bronze nozzle is placed 3 meters away from the subject, shooting 12.5L/mins (750L/h) of water toward the subject for at least 3 mins. Subject is placed on a rotating platform to ensure water jet is shot at all possible angles. Limited water ingression is allowed, and no product malfunctions should be found on subject after the test.
- IPX6 or IP66 - Strong Water Jet Test: a bronze nozzle is placed 3 meters away from the subject, shooting 100L/mins (6,000L/h) of strong water jet toward the subject for at least 3 mins. Subject is placed on a rotating platform to ensure water jet is shot at all possible angles. Limited water ingression is allowed, and no product malfunctions should be found on subject after the test.
- IPX7 or IP67 – Temporary Water Immersion Test: Place subject inside a water tank with water of at least 1 meter deep for at least 30 mins. The bottom of the subject has to be at least 1 meter deep under water surface and the top of the subject should at least be 15cm under water surface. Limited water ingression is allowed, and no product malfunctions should be found on subject after the test.
- IPX8 or IP68 - Protected against continuous water submersion: Place subject inside a (pressured) water tank with water of at 1 meter deep for at least 24 hours. YIS Marine current does not do IP68 tests internally so IP68 tests shall be performed by 3rd party labs should it be required by our customers.
